On 3 May 2024 the Court of Justice organised a conference to celebrate the 20^th anniversary of the 2004 accession. President Lenaerts delivered the opening speech in which he stressed the fact that the 2004 accession put to rest the idea of a divided Europe. His speech focused on the values on which the EU is founded. In his view, those values serve to define the identity of the EU as a common legal order and create synergies between that identity and the constitutional identities of the Member States. “The EU”, he emphasised, “is first and foremost a Union of values”.

In occasione della conferenza, organizzata il 3 maggio 2024 dalla Corte di giustizia per celebrare il 20° anniversario dell’adesione avvenuta nel 2004, l’Autore ha tenuto il discorso di apertura, sottolineando che l’adesione del 2004 ha messo fine all’idea di un’Europa divisa. Il suo discorso si è concentrato sui valori su cui si fonda l’Unione europea. Questi valori servono a definire l’identità dell’Unione europea come ordinamento giuridico comune e a creare sinergie tra questa identità e le identità costituzionali degli Stati membri. “L’Unione europea”, sottolinea l’Autore, “è innanzitutto un’Unione di valori”.
